So as a healthcare professional and in one sentence, tell me and others… How do you get your patients interested in Self Management

You familiarise yourself with their history, listen to what they tell you about their life with pain, pick up on cues they give you and make the discussion relevant to their life.

You tell them they can achieve their goals- not yours. And then when they ask how- start providing answers that move them in that direction.

Meet the patient where they are at. Not everyone is ready for self management. We cannot fix everyone’s problems. But definitely always educate and provide enough information, tools, skills etc for the patient to know what their role is in the rehab relationship.
