Congratulations to my friend Dr Amanda Williams

Congratulations to my friend Amanda Williams who has been awarded Honorary membership of International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) - very well deserved and.... long overdue

I've known Amanda since 1994, when she came along to talk to the back pain support group in Hornchurch.

I remember the evening well. Is was in the latter part of October and raining. I don't think she had transport, but I was so grateful she came all the way from central London, to speak to the group about the INPUT Pain Management Programme, she was part of. I think most of us in the back pain group were doctor/therapy shoppers, but I knew there had to be something else out there, for someone like me, who was looking for information/skills I could use to manage my pain, myself.

Amanda told the group about the programme. How it works and what would participants learn.  I was hooked and wanted to get on the programme ASAP....but as usual there was a waiting list and I couldn't get on the programme until July 1996. Roughly an 18month wait.  But it was well worth it.

I don't think Amanda (or me) know how much of an effect the programme would have on me and many others over the coming months and years.

Amanda, I will always be grateful to you, to coming out on that rainy October evening, to speak to the group and what was to follow. If you hadn't, there would be no Pain Toolkit and me probably ending up on an operating table.  A massive THANK YOU.
